CropLife International CEO on Food Dependence in a Warming World

“With a heating planet, there are more and more countries which are becoming food dependent,” says Emily Rees, the President and CEO of CropLife International.

Rees caught up with The Point Cloud at the AIM for Climate Summit in Washington, DC.

The Point Cloud is Agerpoint’s interview series featuring leaders at the intersection of climate, agriculture, nature, and technology. Watch and read highlights from the conversation below. You can also hear the full interview as an audio podcast on your favorite platforms.

Key Quotes from Emily Rees

“Agricultural commodities, one third of them will cross, at least, borders twice before they get from the farmer to either the food supplier or the end consumer. And with that, with every movement over the border, we need to make sure that we don't have borders, barriers to trade, which would be unfair, discriminatory, due to this fragmentation. So we need to keep food supplies moving around and we need to facilitate that trade now, especially to be prepared for climate change.”

“What we’re seeing now is that with these growing populations, with a heating planet, there are more and more countries which are becoming food dependent. So I think that in that case, we need to be very cautious about these movements, these calls for food sovereignty. Many countries are unable, will be unable to go there. What we need to do is make sure that we are boosting local resilience, but also keeping trade flows open.”
